  Bolsena Lake (Lacus Volsiniensis)

It is the largest lake in Lazio and the fifth in Italy. However, it is the largest lake originated from a crater. Its surface is 114.5 square kilometers and its perimeter is 43 kilometers. Its altitude is 305 meters above sea level; it is oval shaped, 12 kilometers large, 14 kilometers long and 146 meters deep.

Two small islands lie in it, Bisentina and Martana, originating probably from crater fragments, which are almost uncontaminated. The lake is famous for eel fishing, as the eel is the typical local dish.

   What to see:

The lake is surrounded by a 60-kilomenter long panoramic road that connects Bolsena, Montefiascone, Marta, Capodimonte and Valentano. Bisentina is particularly worth visiting especially in the summer, from which the name of “Bisentinian Summer.” Close by is Orvieto (famous are the Cathedral and Saint Patrick’s well) and Civita di Bagnoregio.

   How to reach the lake:

From Rome go to Viterbo by Via Cassia and continue for Montefiascone. Then, you can either go to Bolsena or towards Marta and Capodimonte.
